Manly Monday ep. 02 Skincare 101: for people with skin

6:30 AM

There seems to be some strange notion amongst us that skincare products are for women.  This may come as a surprise but skincare is actually for all humans with skin; with that in mind, this post isn't only for men but it is written for the person who is new to skincare.

When you begin to take care of your skin, there are three things that are most important that are fairly easy to work into a routine.

01.  Cleanser   You should use cleanser once a day, at night before bed.  If you want to wash your face in the morning, which just seems right after sweating and drooling in your sleep, just use water.  Overusing cleanser can strip your skin of the desired moisture and result in dull, flaky skin.  You should not use the same soap you use for your body on your face because the skin on your face is more sensitive than the rest of your body.  Even if a soap says it is ok for face and body, you should not use it for your face, it is banking on you not having the knowledge of skincare.
When shopping for cleanser, consider your skin type.
Are you acne-prone?  Look for a gentle foaming cleanser.  I like CeraVe foaming facial cleanser.
Do you have dry or sensitive skin?  Look for a hydrating cleanser.  My favorite is Neutrogena ultra gentle hydrating cleanser.
Pro tip #1- if your skin feels dry or tight after cleansing, your cleanser is too harsh.
Pro tip #2- the best time to shave is right after cleansing.

02.  Moisturizer     Apply after cleansing, and look for something fragrance free.  It goes on smooth and makes your skin feel nice and soft and it slows signs of aging, i.e wrinkles.  The first sign of age for men are wrinkles around the eyes and forehead, never around the mouth because shaving all the time exfoliates that area.  I don't even want to recommend a moisturizer because there are so many great options but if you have no interest in hunting the right moisturizer for you, just pick up some CeraVe moisturizing cream, the kind with the pump on top.  Always reach for skincare products with a pump or squeeze bottle.  Avoid the ones in tubs as much as possible because dipping your grubby fingers in a tub just gets bacteria all up in there and then it will eventually lead to acne breakouts in your face.
Protip #3- moisturize after shaving!  Keep that soft just-shaved feeling going as long as possible!
Protip #4- if you feel like your face can't breathe after applying moisturizer, use less.  If it still feels heavy, look for a lighter moisturizer.  This is where gel moisturizer comes in.

03.  Sunscreen   You should be wearing sunscreen every day.  If you'll be outside, near a window, or near a skylight, you should wear sunscreen.  If the UV index is 3 or higher, you get the idea.  Wait about ten minutes after you've applied moisturizer, for it to be absorbed into your skin, then apply about 1/4 tsp of sunscreen.  If you have a beard, an 1/8 of a tsp will do, but make sure whatever area of your skin that is exposed is getting covered.  Don't forget your ears, neck (and your throat, duh) and any part of your scalp that will be exposed- especially if you have a bald spot.  Applying sunscreen is the best way to prevent wrinkles in the long run, and to avoid skin cancer.  Look for something with spf30 or higher.  My favorite is Blue Lizard Australian Sunscreen, mostly because the white bottle is UV reactive and will turn blue in sunlight to remind you to reapply.
Protip #5- you have to apply sunscreen every two hours, or if you've been in water, as soon as you dry off.
